#REPOST @lakota.made with @get__repost__app Winyanktehca – Two-Souled Person

The Lakota people hold winyanktehca, or two-souled persons, in high esteem. These individuals possess a unique medicine that has been sought for healing, spiritual guidance, and even for their visions during times of war.

Two-spirit people are believed to be born with both masculine and feminine spirits. They have a profound spiritual connection to nature, often experiencing visions of future events or distant happenings. Their ceremonies were unique, and they were revered for their strong medicine and ability to communicate with the spirits. People often sought them out for important rituals, such as piercing their daughters’ ears.

I was taught to respect the sanctity of their ceremonies, as these were their unique medicines. It is up to the two-spirit individuals to decide who is worthy of witnessing their powers.

As a young girl, I was fortunate to witness one of their ceremonies and observed their deep spiritual connection to nature. Unfortunately, many of their teachings and ceremonies have been lost over time.

During periods of harsh persecution, Indigenous people faced severe punishments for their identity. The winyanktehca, with their unique nature, were often misunderstood and feared, sometimes being labeled as demons or witches. Many had to hide their true selves, forget their traditions, and sever their spiritual connections to survive.

Winyanktehca have always been an integral part of our communities. We have cherished, respected, and held them in high regard for their unique qualities and contributions.

To truly celebrate Indigenous culture, we must embrace all aspects of it, including our two-spirit people, whom we have always accepted and celebrated.
