#REPOST @pseesequasis with @get__repost__app In ‘People of the Watershed: Photographs by John Macfie’, there’s a series of photographs taken by Pelican Falls, near Sioux Lookout, Ontario. Seven Native boys, likely far from home and in the Pelican Falls Residential School. They are all garbed in the denim coveralls that were the uniform and they are watching a settler trout fishing. Their gaze is intently on the fisherman. In doing research that led to this book, Anishinaabe artist Rebecca Belmore contacted me, having seen the photos, and asked to be put in touch with John Macfie, who was still alive at the time. They spoke; Macfie gave his permission for Rebecca to use the photos for an installation piece, and also, it turns out, had known Rebecca’s father. The photos inspired ‘At Pelican Falls’ by Belmore and of course are in the book. I think about the boys a lot. I wonder if any are still around, and if any of them will actually see themselves in the photos. #repostandroid #repostw10
